A Day To Catch the Northbound Palmetto on Sunday April 28, 2013

On Sunday April 28, 2013, I received a heads-up from Yahoo's "Old Dominion Railfans" group that the northbound Palmetto had 4 private cars tacked onto the rear, so it had me out of the house and up to Ashland that afternoon.

I nearly missed an opportunity to get Amtrak P053, the southbound Auto Train, led by P40 835 with P40 818 trailing. Luckily I was able to pull over and get it at Ashcake Road.

After P053's passage, I decided to head up to Myrtle Street to meet one of my YouTube subscriber's who is also a member of Yahoo's "Old Dominion Railfans" group. Right as I arrived another headlight appeared to the south and had to do a low angle shot of Q406, passing by behind ES44AC 915 and SD60M 8779.

Finally at 5:40 PM, the northbound Palmetto called the signals at Elmont and it passed by shortly thereafter. Due to the weight of the train on this day there were two engines on the head end of the train, thus power was provided by P42s 23 and 133. And as said, there were 4 private cars tacked onto the rear, in order as follows:

1. ex-AOE Berlin
2. California Zephyr Silver Quail
3. Milwaukee Road Super Dome
4. Milwaukee Road Minnesota River
